Lindy's Hawaiian Beans

The Story of Lindy's Hawaiian Beans

I love baked beans of all kinds, and this recipe for Hawaiian Beans is one that always gets good reviews.

This is a recipe that was given to me a long long time ago by a friend and since then it has become a family favorite.  I'm going to figure they're called Hawaiian Beans because of the pineapple, but I love the combination of the pineapple, green pepper, and bacon along with the sweetness of the sugar and bite of Worcestershire sauce.

These beans are so easy to make and great for any BBQ or picnic. I've certainly taken them to my share of potlucks. You can bake them in the oven, or make them in your crockpot, both methods work equally well.

And don't be getting all fancy with the beans, you want the ones that just have tomato sauce in them.  So just plain old pork and beans in tomato sauce will suffice.

This recipe can easily be doubled.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices applewood bacon
  • 1 green pepper diced fine
  • 1 sweet onion diced
  • 1 6-ounce can crushed pineapple, drained (or you could use fresh pineapple finely diced)
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 14.5 ounce cans pork and beans in tomato sauce, partially drained

Instructions

  • In a large skillet cook the bacon until crisp. Remove from the pan and crumble. Pour off most of the drippings leaving just enough to saute the pepper and onion.
Saute the pepper and onion for about 5 minutes, or until softened.
Add the pineapple, ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire, mix well.
Add the beans and bacon to the pan and stir to combine. Pour into a casserole dish and bake at 300 degrees for about an hour.

Notes

To prepare in a crockpot, follow the directions as stated, but place the prepared ingredients into your crockpot, cook for 3 hours on low or 1 hour on high.

Hi, I'm Lindy.

I am a home-trained chef who loves to cook and eat delicious food. As I like to say, "Life is too short to eat mediocre food". And I find too much food out there is mediocre. I don't think good food needs to be fussy, or difficult to prepare. Most of my recipes are fresh, quick, easy, and tasty while keeping both calories and fats in check.
